After all these years, FB is still my No 1 go to platform for traffic generation.

It’s certainly changed quite dramatically since I started using it back in 2010 and very unfortunately the organic reach we small business owners used to benefit tremendously from is now almost non existent, but….

They are still trying to help businesses get the best results and I’m a big fan of one of their latest editions – The Facebook Lead Ad!

Have you been hearing a lot of negative talk about Facebook marketing recently? I know I have!

It’s mainly along the lines of ‘it’s not as great as it used to be’ and ‘Facebook want you to pay for everything!’

Yes, there have been some major changes since I started on Facebook way back in 2010. However, I believe, even in 2016, it is still the number one way to build an email list.

How has Facebook changed?

 
Some of you will be aware of my story, but for those of you who don’t know me, I’ll go through it briefly.

I started with a Facebook fan page in 2010. I didn’t have a blog, website or anything like that.

In those days, you were able to place a landing page within your Facebook fan page. However, you needed to be able to write code (the code was called FBML, or Facebook Markup Language).

This was also well before big landing page companies, like LeadPages, InstaBuilder, and OptimizePress, who have easy to use software that could create FB landing pages.

Basically, I saw a gap in the market. I hired a software developer from America to write me a script that would allow anyone to create a landing page on their Facebook fan page without needing to be a coder.

This only cost me about $100, and this script became my lead magnet. I gave it away to people and, in just a few short months, I’d built up a subscriber database of 18,000 people.

Now, back in 2010, I was able to build this list organically. What’s changed over the last few years is that Facebook will now charge you.

You have to pay to build your audience. You have to pay to get people to notice you on their platform.

This has led to a lot of people sounding like the harbingers of doom when it comes to Facebook marketing.

How can Facebook help me now in 2016?

 
Yes, you do now have to pay to be seen and heard on Facebook, but they still remain extremely clued up when it comes to helping the small marketer.

A recent update, which I love, is Facebook Lead Ads.

Previously, with any ads you placed on Facebook, people would click your ad, and they will go off Facebook to your landing page. This landing page would be on a website, a blog etc.

On your landing page, they could sign up and go and get your free gift (i.e. your lead magnet)

Now, with Facebook Lead Ads, they’ve completely done away with anyone needing a website or blog.

Everything can now happen right inside Facebook!

Your landing page is on Facebook. The subscribe button is on Facebook. Facebook will even prepopulate the subscribe form with the visitor’s name and email address they use for their Facebook account.

All a visitor has to do is click ‘subscribe’ (or whatever other button – you can choose what the button says when you set up your Lead Ad).

Think about that for a minute. Previously, you needed to set up a website or blog.

You had to pay for domain registration and web hosting. You had to spend time designing your landing page on your site, or spend money on software.

Now, you can build an email list right inside of your Facebook fan page – no ‘outside’ website or blog needed!

Facebook Lead Ads is a great way to help you build an email list.

What costs are associated with Facebook Lead Ads?

 
As I said before, the days of organically growing on Facebook are long gone. However, the returns you can get from building a big subscribers list are huge.

I’ve been playing with Facebook Lead Ads myself for a few weeks now. I’ve been doing so many experiments with web clicks, conversions, landing pages etc, and I can conclude that Lead Ads are giving me my cheapest leads to date!
