How to Build an Email List Without a Lead Magnet

There’s no doubt about it, if you want to build an online lifestyle business that you can run from anywhere in the world, you need to build an email list.

It’s as simple as that.

Don’t listen to all the naysayers that say email marketing is on it’s way out.

Yes there are many different methods of communication these days, but email is still the largest and most common form.

Maybe in ten years it will have changed, who knows, but let’s focus on right now.

If you’re not building an email list, not only are you leaving money on the table, you’re also missing out on social shares, comments, blog visits, and engagement too.

Your email list are your fans, your advocates, your extended marketing arm. Treat them well and they’ll tell everyone about you.

Do you feel daunted by building a list? Don’t worry, it’s something that trips many people up.

Whether it’s fear holding you back, or whether you just don’t know what to put forward as your lead magnet or your compelling offer, the whole list building process of trying to get people to your offer can feel very complex and overwhelming.

It’s this overwhelm that stops you in your tracks, makes you second guess yourself, and the next thing you know, you decide ‘I’m not going to list build, I’m going to try and do it some other way.’

Why do I need to build a list?

Are there ways of having an online business without building a list? Yes.

But it’s actually more difficult. Unless you’ve absolutely mastered something like paid advertising, building your community and building an email list remains the number one way of building a successful lifestyle business.

Because I want to eliminate overwhelm for you, and get you started with little or no barriers, today I’m going to show you how to start building your email list without a lead magnet.

I’ll give you an example of this right here on this page. I am delivering a piece of content which is a video. Further down on this very page is a subscribe button that says “Subscribe if you want notifications about these videos in your inbox.”

Boom. That’s it! I don’t have a free e-book, I don’t have a free PDF, I don’t have any spreadsheets, I don’t have any mind maps.

I don’t have all that kind of stuff that takes all this time to put together. I simply have a subscribe button that says, “Subscribe if you want notifications about these videos.”

Please note, I do also have specific ‘lead magnet’ list builders on my site, but the goal here is to show you how to create a very simple one without a specific lead magnet.

What can I offer my subscribers?

It could be a weekly tip, or a short weekly newsletter, or something that you could just deliver into their inbox every week to let them know that a new blog post is coming out.
I find setting up Google Alerts invaluable when it comes to keeping an eye on what is happening in my niche. Simply find a tip or strategy each week that you can email out to your list.

I worry that I will run out of content to send my subscribers!

There’s an even easier method!

There’s a lady called Mari Smith who sends out something every week called Social Scoop. She’s been doing it for a couple of years now.
Basically she picks three or four best blog posts she’s found that week to help her readers.

Justin Brooke, an amazing traffic and conversion specialist, does exactly the same. He’s got a newsletter called ‘Traffic Tips for Busy People’.

He finds five or six great traffic blog posts and he simply creates an email once a week that says, “These are the best blog posts around the internet for building traffic this week.” Then, he puts the links to the blog posts in that email.
In other words, you don’t even have to create content to send out every week.

You simply find interesting blog posts (i.e. content created by other people) in your niche that you think will help your readers.

Could you do that? Absolutely!

Could you go out and find three or more amazing blog posts in your industry or niche, and deliver them to your visitors? Yes, you could.

Don’t get me wrong. A PDF, a mind map, or some other specific list builder will have higher conversions. I wrote recently on how to easily create list building magnets.
But the point of this post is to simply get you started, with or without high conversions. Even if you get just 5% of your website / blog / authority platform visitors to sign up, at least you’re starting your list building efforts.

Your challenge!

Your challenge this week, should you choose to accept it, is…

1) Think about the simplest thing in your niche or industry that you could deliver to people via email. Is it a tip of the week? Could you ‘report’ on new products launched in your niche to inform your readers on what’s good and what is a complete dud? Could you do a weekly ‘round up’ of the best blog posts and content published elsewhere in your niche?

2) Stick a subscribe button somewhere so that people can sign up to your email list and start receiving your information.

A brilliant spot I find is using the space at the bottom of each post. If someone’s read all the way to the bottom of one of my posts, then chances are, they are very interested in what I’ve got to say.

It makes sense to have a subscribe button there so they can continue to receive information from me.

I also utilise the right hand column of my blog, so while someone is scrolling through my content, they can subscribe.

If you have an authority platform where you publish content, for example a Facebook page, make sure you have a subscriber button there too.

3) Make it happen! Get out there, start building your list and start building your community. I cannot tell you how important this is to your success in building your online lifestyle business!

In other words, I want you to strip away all the obstacles and barriers that are stopping you getting started. Once you’ve got started on your list building journey, you can then look to creating specific list builders.
