Welcome to Episode 63 of Make it Happen Monday!
You’re probably aware that the way to build your business is to build and nurture relationships with potential customers.
And you’re probably aware that one of the best ways to do this is to get people onto an email list so you can contact them.
You do this by creating a basic opt in funnel where someone can leave you their name and email address
In this week’s Make It Happen Monday, I’m sharing with you how to create a basic opt in funnel; the landing page, the thank you page, and the follow up emails to customers, so you can start building those relationships and have a more profitable business.

Today, we’re going to talk about how to create your opt in funnel. I wanted to do a demonstration of this, so we’re in front of a whiteboard!
This is ideal for those of you who have not come across anything that shows you how to build a basic opt in funnel.
The basic funnel has 3 main elements; the landing page, the thank you page, and the follow up emails.
So we start with our landing page. We talked in the last episode about creating a lead magnet.
The landing page is where you will put your headline, bullet points, perhaps a little image or video, anything that explains why someone should download your lead magnet, why it’s so valuable, and why they absolutely need it.
Someone who lands on your landing page can then leave their name and email address here in order to get your free gift (your lead magnet) that you are offering.
The next page they will go to is typically the thank you page. In other words, you are thanking them for requesting your lead magnet (whether its an eBook, video, registering for a webinar or registering to receive more content or a weekly newsletter etc).
And, in the mean time, while someone is on your thank you page, they go also go into your email funnel.
You then use your emails to give them their free gift, and build and nurture a relationship with the person who’s signed up.
The crucial fact here is that 100% of people who opt in on your landing page will see your thank you page.
As people go through your email funnel, you may get 80-90% opening your first email, you may only get about 50% or so opening your second email and, by the time you get to 3rd, 4th and subsequent emails, you may be down to 20% open rates or less, depending on how good you are at email marketing.
It’s only at the thank you page are you guaranteed a success rate of 100%. So you don’t want to waste this page!
This page should NOT be a standard Aweber style ‘thank you for signing up, now look out for our email in your inbox’ type page.
It needs to be a message from you.
It can be just a ‘thank you for downloading this free gift, this is who I am, this is what I’m about, have a look around my blog’ message which is basically an introduction to you, giving someone a background as to who you are, what your brand is, and why you are giving away this free gift.
You could send them to your blog, or your social media accounts, or anywhere that tells them more about you.
This tactic is all about really building and nurturing relationships, so when these people get to open your first email, they feel a connection with you.
I recommend you add a photograph of you, your name, and then tell them, as clearly as possible, who the email is coming from. In other words, ‘Look out for an email in your inbox from xxxxx.’
Another tactic is to turn your thank you page into a sales page.
For example – ‘Thank you for requesting your free gift, it’s winging its way to your inbox. While you are here, I’d love to give you another gift.’
You can then make some sort of awesome sales offer directly on your thank you which people can take advantage of.
It does not have to be a sales offer. Perhaps you might create more of a funnel after the thank you page.
‘Thank you for downloading my free gift. Now I have a video series you might be interested. Click the button below, etc’ and you give them another free gift.
In other words, you might have a launch funnel that follows on directly from your thank you page
It really is up to you how creative you want to be. But your basic opt in funnel is a landing page followed by a thank you page.
A landing page could be something that you custom build yourself on your blog, or you may be using something like LeadPages, which I use, or you might use ClickFunnels, Thrive Themes, or any number of the landing page builders available to us on the market.
It has become infinitely easier to build landing pages over the last few years with these fantastic people out there creating awesome tools.
With your thank you page, you could use the same software you used to build your landing page, but I tend to use blog pages because, after I’ve pulled someone in from my landing page, I want them to get to know me.
So I take them straight onto my blog, I tell them who I am, how I’d like them to peruse my blog, I ask them to tell me a bit more about them and their story etc.
In other words, I take them straight to my blog to try and build that connection with them.
Here is a video showing you step by step how I create my optin funnels in 10 mins or less!
I explained before that you should send your free gift in the first email that goes out to someone who signs up.
You might be thinking, ‘Why don’t I give them the free gift on my thank you page?’
You can do! But I really like to encourage someone to open my first email in order to get their free gift so they get into the habit of opening my emails.
Now, this is worth testing and measuring as there’s no hard and fast rules here. But it’s something that works for me.
As someone comes through the email series, into the 2nd, 3rd, 4th email and beyond, you might send them to your blog, or a sales funnel, or you might send them to one of your social media sites.
For example – ‘Come and follow me on Instagram, like my page on Facebook, I’ve just created this great post, come and check it out!’
You could give them lots of content, you could get to know them, perhaps you send out surveys, send out questions, blog posts, offers, launches whatever you want!
It’s entirely up to you where you send people from your emails, and what content you disseminate out to your list.
We’ll take about this in a later episode about email marketing (what do we send out, how do we keep people interested, what are they wanting to hear from us etc).
But the main purpose of an email series is to build and nurture a relationship with each person that signs up to receive your free gift.
It’s this relationship that will help you when it comes to making offers and building your business.
Your challenge this week, should you choose to accept it, is…..
Set up your opt in funnel
1) Create your landing page
Either custom build it yourself on your blog or website, or use one of the many landing page building software available, such as LeadPages.
2) Create your thank you page
Again, you have the choice of using a page on your blog or website, like I do, or you can use a landing page building software.
3) Create at least your first email, and preferably at least 2 more follow up emails
Set up your autoresponder using your chosen autoresponder service, and then add, at the very least, your first ‘welcome’ email, and attach your free gift (your lead magnet), if you are not giving this away on your thank you page.
4) Place your opt in funnel onto your blog or website
We will talk more in an upcoming episode about where we can put our landing page and how we can optimize it so lots of people see it.
But for now, add it to your blog, write a post about it with a link on your Facebook page and link to it from your other social media accounts.
See the comments below? Leave me a link to your landing page once you’ve set up your opt in funnel – I’d love to see what you’ve got going on!
Also please share with your friends if you think this Make It Happen Monday episode has been useful and of course have an amazing week, live life on purpose and Make It Happen.
