Welcome to Episode 28 of Make it Happen Monday!
Published every Monday, this is my weekly video series helping you to blast through any barriers holding up your success in life and business and giving you weekly tips and inspiration to move forward to achieve your goals and dreams.
There is an anonymous quote that says, “Entrepreneurs live for a couple of years how others won’t so they can live the rest of their lives how others can’t.”
This isn’t just an eloquent way of saying that entrepreneurship takes effort.
Becoming an entrepreneur takes massive sacrifice!
You may need to lose sleep, shuffle childcare schedules, give up things you love to do, and miss out on time with friends.
You may need to mortgage your home or work several jobs to make it happen.
Each entrepreneur has to make their own sacrifices, but the fact is you will not achieve business success unless you’re FULLY committed.
In this week’s Make It Happen Monday, I’m talking about the sacrifice and discipline it takes to be an entrepreneur and how to decide if it’s really what you want.

This week, I want to ask you a question. “Do you really want to be an entrepreneur?”
Now, you’re probably thinking, “Why do you ask that question, Jo?”
What it takes to be an entrepreneur
This week I received an email from somebody who I had invited to a webinar who then came back to me with, “I don’t have time to watch webinars. Please send me the recording in a readable format. I really want to learn, and I really do want to run my own company.”
I got an email from another saying, “I can’t attend the webinar because it’s at 1 o’clock in the morning.”
Another person said they didn’t have time, blah, blah, blah!
OK, I’m not out to judge people on their time management. However, I kept thinking about the sentence, “I don’t have the time to learn and get the skills I need to do this, and yet I want to learn and run my own business.”
This just doesn’t go into the same email….it doesn’t actually go into the same life!
The simple fact is, if you want to do something extraordinary, achieve things that are extraordinary (which is what an entrepreneur does), then you need to do extraordinary things in order to make that happen.
This might mean getting up at 1 o’clock in the morning to watch a webinar, or getting up an hour early in the morning, or going to bed an hour later at night, to make sure that you have the time to learn new skills.
Whatever it is you want to do in life, if you want to do and be something extraordinary, then you are going to have to do stuff outside of normal life.
This led me to think about the sacrifices that I’ve made. I didn’t just wake up one morning in a penthouse apartment in Phuket with views of millionaire’s yachts outside!
I didn’t just wake up and go, “Oh, look at where I am. Isn’t this amazing?”
I had to work my backside off! And I continue to do so.
I love what I do, so it doesn’t feel like a job most of the time, but I’m putting effort in, making sacrifices, and doing things that other people won’t do in order to achieve the things I want to achieve.
When I first started online back in 2010, I was in Europe and then I was in Asia, and I was watching webinars by various people in the US.
This meant watching webinars well into the night and early morning.
Not only that, because I wanted to reach the US audience, I was presenting webinars at those silly times too!
If you’ve been with me from the get-go, you’ll know that I’ve got on webinars at 4 o’clock in the morning saying, “Good morning guys, its 4 a.m. etc.”
I’ve done interviews with people at 1 o’clock in the morning, 3 o’clock in the morning etc, just because it fits in with their time zone.
The simple fact is, you are going to have to do more than you expect of yourself if you want to be more than you currently are.
If you want to have an extraordinary life, you are going to have to do MORE.
I remember just weeks after having my daughter, I had to take her to a business meeting with me!
I changed her nappy on a glass table in a really flash apartment about three minutes before I had a business meeting with a baby in my arm.
The things we have to do when we want to be an entrepreneur, want to run our own business, and want to have an extraordinary life!
Being an entrepreneur is not as simple as waking up one morning thinking, “Right, I’m going to run a business, earn loads of money and, within six months, I’m going to live in a mansion on a top of the California hills with the beach rolling in!”
I wish it was that simple! What are you willing to do?
Your challenge this week, should you choose to accept it, is…
Find out if really want to be an entrepreneur:
1) Go and find somebody who’s doing what you’re doing right now.
They are all online, so I’m sure you’ll find somebody who’s doing what you want to do right now.
2) Find out what did they did to get to where they are now.
See if you can interview them, or find a video they’ve made, or read their Wikipedia profile, or read a book they’ve written etc.
What did they sacrifice? How many hours did they put into it? What journey did they take? What exactly was their path to their success right now?
Understand it, investigate it, and do your due diligence. Know, with your eyes wide open, what it is you’re getting in to.
I want you to get into this with your eyes absolutely wide open and truly decide if this is the path for you.
If you get to the end of this investigation and think, “I don’t want to go through all that,” that’s OK!
Entrepreneurs aren’t better than anybody else. They’re just different people who are taking a different path.
You have to do in life whatever it is that makes you happy!
Once you’ve watched the video, I’d love to hear from and about you.
