Welcome to Episode 10 of Make it Happen Monday!
Published every Monday, this is my weekly video series helping you to blast through any barriers holding up your success in life and business and giving you weekly tips and inspiration to move forward to achieve your goals and dreams.
Just a few days ago I was surfing through YouTube, when I came across ‘Steve Jobs 10 Rules for Success’
It’s well worth subscribing to Evan Carmichael’s channel – Modeling the Masters as he publishes lots of these 10 Rules for Success videos.
The first rule was ‘Don’t Live a Limited Life’. What a great message.
It made me think about how ‘out of the box’ I have lived my life over the last 6 years and so today’s episode is about my journey.
What I’m doing living in Phuket rather than the UK and how we’ve traveled the world as a family.
I tell you this story in the hope that it inspires you to look inside yourself and ask how you can start living your dreams right now!
I saw a great quote recently that said;
“The Goal is to Die With Memories, Not Dreams”
So watch today’s episode and stop dreaming and start making memories!
Here are a couple of my original videos from years ago;
I’ve spoken before about having limiting beliefs. Today, I go one further and talk about living a limited life.
A limited life is one where you have dreams, desires and wishes, but you limit yourself by saying ‘I can only do X when I get Y’
For example, ‘I can only live in a sunny country when I have at least £100,000 in savings’ or ‘I can only be successful when I have lost a stone in weight’ etc.
That’s easy for you to say, Jo, you have a successful business!
Some of you may be aware that I live on the gorgeous island of Phuket in Thailand. What a lot of you might not know is at what point in my online journey I got here.
The assumption many people make is that my online business became really successful and I therefore had the money to live the lifestyle I live now.
Let me tell you the truth…..
A few years ago, my partner and I had a dream to live abroad. If I ever had children, I wanted to raise that child in a sunny country.
I didn’t want my child to grow up in front of the telly and video games, always indoors because it’s always bloody cold in England!
When I met my partner, I found that he had a similar goal. So we decided that we wanted to find a way that we could travel and work as we didn’t have any savings or any money.
We started looking into how we can make money online, and we came across a couple of seminars. I attended a social media seminar in London and met lots of internet marketers.
I met a marketer called Chris Farrell and joined his ‘Mentor Me’ program. I got started with my Facebook fan page and started growing my business online.
In spring of 2010, my daughter was four, and we really wanted to leave the UK
It’s at this point most people would have just stayed safely ensconced in a little house in the UK telling themselves ‘As soon as I earn this amount of money, then I’ll go abroad.’
Let me tell you what we did…..
In spring of 2010, we went out to Cyprus for week to see a friend who lived there. They asked us to housesit for 6-7 weeks later on that summer.
We jumped at the chance. At the time we were living in rented property. We gave our notice to our landlord, and put absolutely everything we owned on Gumtree.
This came to the princely sum of £900! (Yes, that was it.)
We packed our suitcases, headed off to Cyprus, and we started our internet marketing business in Cyprus.
After our friend came back from their travels, we decided to hot foot it over to Australia (where my partner comes from). We stayed with his parents for about 4 months.
It wasn’t easy. I love his parents, but you can imagine what it’s like as an adult, with your own child, living in your partner’s parents’ house. Not ideal!
All this time, we were still trying to figure out how to live our dream life of travel.
We came back to England and then went to Spain with my mom for one of these ‘£99, 3-4 days in Andalusia’ type of packages.
Typically, for the £99, you got a tour and a timeshare sales pitch.
The deal was, we could pay 36,000 euros and we could come back to Andalusia for one week every year. Or we could transfer it for a week to somewhere else every year.
We weren’t hugely excited by this. But an ‘added extra’ caught our attention.
We could also get access to this package where we could get cheap deals all around the world at the drop of a hat. If we could be flexible with travel, we could literally book anywhere in the world for dirt cheap prices!
However, we did not want the timeshare, and we certainly did not want to pay 36,000 euros! In all fairness, even if we wanted it, we couldn’t afford it.
I’m not going to tell you what we paid in the end, but all I can tell you is that it was a fraction of the price.
We bought a week in a little Marriott timeshare somewhere out in Branson, Missouri, which we have never been to. But it got us access to this travel package for incredibly cheap weeks anywhere in the world.
So we started living in Marriott hotels!
It cost us about £250-300 a week, which included utilities, cleaning, kids’ club, broadband, gym membership…everything!
We actually compared it to where we were living before in the UK, and we weren’t paying that much more. AND we were staying in 5-star luxury resorts around the world!
While we were travelling around the world staying in Marriott hotels, we fell in love with Phuket and found ourselves coming back here again and again.
As our business grew, and our income grew, we decided that it was really time to settle down for a while, especially as my daughter was now nine and needed to go to school.
We enrolled her into an international school here in Phuket. And we now rent this beautiful apartment.
My partner and I managed to do all of this not because we had lots of money. As you now know, we left the UK with just £900 in our pockets!
Instead, we did this by suspending reality for a little while.
Instead of limiting ourselves with thoughts such as ‘we don’t have the money, so we can’t possibly travel now’ or ‘once we are earning this amount of money online, then we’ll travel’ etc, we changed it to ‘what if?’
What if we could actually just pack up everything and leave in a week? What if we could just travel around the world?
Yes, we have a child. Yes, we have responsibilities. But what if?
We got rid of everything in a week, we left England, and we’ve been traveling ever since!
Each time, we’ve just found ways to do whatever it is we needed to do. My daughter is healthy, happy, and doing well at school. My partner and I are also doing well.
We succeeded at suspending reality, going out and just doing whatever we want to do.
Your challenge this week, should you choose to accept it, is…
I want you to take your first steps to getting rid of your limited life:
1) Sign up to Evan Carmichael’s YouTube channel. Basically, he puts videos together of successful people’s top 10 rules for success. So he’s got Tony Robbins, Steve Jobs, Gary Vaynerchuk etc.
The inspiration for this Make It Happen Monday video came from the Steve Jobs video where he talks about how to live the life that you choose and not a limited life. Watch that video!
2) Now, suspend reality for just a moment. Think of the dreams and goals that you have, and then think, ‘what if?’
What if you could do it now? Not when you’re millionaire. Not when you’ve lost loads of weight and look like a model! What if you could do it right now?
When you hear that inevitable little voice in your head saying, “Yeah, but you can’t,” ask yourself “Yeah, but if I could, how would I…..right now?”
Just by asking yourself these kinds of questions, you’ll start to attract the answers that will tell you how you can go and do these things that you really want to do right now.
Please don’t wait! Life is too short and we only get one shot. You’ve got to grab life by the balls right now. You’ve only got one chance!
The life that you choose is all in your head. You can decide what you want to do. You choose your limitations. You decide what things are going to hold you back and what aren’t.
That’s it! Don’t live a limited life. Suspend your reality. Start living your goals and dreams right now.
Once you’ve watched the video, I’d love to hear from and about you!
Do you feel like you’re holding yourself back from living the life you really want? If so, what risks would you have to take to make the change and how would that make a difference to your life?
Let’s chat below, I look forward to hearing your story!
As always, have an amazing week, live life on purpose and make it happen!
Thanks for watching…
