In the last 5 years since I started my online business back in 2010, I have had the opportunity to travel and live across Europe, South East Asia, Australia and the US.
I lived in Thailand for almost 4 years on and off and as a family we have chased the sun around the globe.
This has been possible only because I run my business entirely online. As long as I have an internet connection I’m free to work virtually anywhere!
My favourite venue was a lovely little beach side restaurant called Mr Oody’s in Phuket.
The feeling of digging your toes in the sand while writing a blog post or a sales letter is second to none! :)
I didn’t realise it at the time but when I got started I took seven distinct steps to build my business.
- I discovered and defined my niche which at the time was Facebook fan pages
- I created a very attractive lead magnet which was a template for creating landing pages on a Facebook page (it wasn’t a common thing back then) and started to build my list
- I created a small product called 2000 Fans in 27 Days and began to monetise my growing list
- I began to build my authority by recording videos and writing articles, which helped me to build my list and my profile
- I created my main product which was a membership site and generated $117k in 7 days on launch
- I began to master different traffic streams to attract more entrepreneurs through my funnel and into my site
- As my business grew I added other streams of income including more products, coaching and affiliate sales.
Put like that it sounds easy peasy right?
But we’re our own worst enemies when building our dream business and life!
The only person that holds us back from achieving everything we want is ourself!

It’s easy to think that those who have met with a semblance of success don’t have the same fears and challenges as you, but of course we do and did.
The difference is that we’ve pushed through and got out of our own way to make our dreams a reality!
So what’s the system?

Step 1 – Know Your Business
Choose & define your niche / passion.
I know that sometimes it’s difficult to know what kind of business you want to start.
I flailed around for 6 months before I fell over Facebook and to be honest I wasn’t even a Facebook fan, but I could see the potential and how it could bring me closer to my long term goals.
So your first niche may not be your life’s burning passion and that’s ok as long as it can lead to something more long term.
Also remember to niche down, don’t go for something too broad or it will be impossible to stand out from the crowd.
Step 2 – Start Building Your Market
The most important part of building your online business is creating an audience.
So many people start with an authority blog or a product, but have no community to market it to.
Before you get caught up with the technical side of building a blog, website or membership site create a simple lead generation funnel and start building a list.
Your email subscribers will become your blog posts sharers, your social media followers and your buyers.
You should then continue to build your list throughout your online career. Your list os your community of potential customers!
Step 3 – Add a Break Even Product
You can build your email list the fast way or the slow way.
Slow equals organically and completely for free.
Fast equals using paid media to get your landing pages in front of thousands of eyeballs quickly.
But many of us don’t have a never ending up front budget for advertising.
That’s why the faster you can add what I call a ‘break-even’ product to your lead generation funnel the better.
By break even I mean somewhere around $7 – $20.
So create or find a small product you can offer to your community. Add it to the back end of your list gen funnel and watch your ads start to pay for themselves.
Step 4 – Build Authority / Credibility
In comes good old ‘content marketing’.
The simple fact is you have to be in it to win it!
Look at the most successful online marketers, what are they doing that perhaps you’re not? The main thing is content.
They’re constantly publishing new articles, videos, podcasts etc.
Slowly but surely growing their profile and / or their brand.
Credibility = Trust and Trust = High Conversions.
When you’re starting out, I suggest choosing only one content platform to avoid overwhelm.
Depending on your own skill set, decide whether you’re going to build your authority via a blog, podcast, videos etc.
Step 5 – Create / Find Product or Service
So let’s imagine, you’ve been building a list of a few thousand subscribers / buyers, you’re regularly sending out valuable content and getting them engaged. What comes next?
It’s time to offer them something they want / need.
Now is the time to add a product or service, whether that be a training program, software, coaching, consulting etc.
You’ll know what to offer as your customers will have been asking for it!
Step 6 – Master Traffic Generation
Your business is rocking and rolling now. Your authority is growing, you have testimonials from buyers and sales are coming in.
Now it’s time to bring in a consistent stream of traffic and with the profit you’re now generating from your main product on top of your break even product, you can begin to master more and more traffic strategies.
Make sure you test and try one strategy at a time unless you have a team of people to help out!
Use your content to drive traffic and ensure you track, test & tweak to improve conversions.
Step 7 – Scale & Grow
This comes a bit later after you’ve really got Steps 1 – 6 down.
But the main crux of this is to continue building your brand, continue building your traffic strategies and then add other income streams.
Whether that be more products, coaching, done for you services or other people’s products.
Quick aside note; If you intend to only be an affiliate marketer, you still need to cover Steps 1 – 6, but instead of your products you use other people’s.
So to recap the 7 steps are;
- Know Your Business
- Create List Builder
- Add a Break Even Product
- Build Authority
- Create Product or Service
- Master Traffic Gen
- Scale & Grow
The most important thing is to get started. You’ll never get anywhere if you just keep thinking about what you should be doing rather than actually doing it.
Just plan to do one steps at a time and set goals and then cross them off as you go.
It takes vision, perseverance, tenacity, a willingness to move through your fears and dogged determination to make it work.
But I guarantee you it does work.
I know you can do it, because I’ve done it and I’m no 20 something tech genius or a super model.
I’m just a normal 40 something Mum with a young mind and big dreams!
