This is going to be a GREAT year, I can feel it in my bones!
Do you ever feel like you’re just drifting along and you look back at the year just passed and wonder, where did it go? What did I do? What did I achieve?
You may have been busy and your days may have been filled with activity but what did you actually do?
If that sounds like you in anyway at all, the good news is that you can totally combat that by taking on this year and living with purpose!
Greet every day, every week, every month with purpose and write your purpose down.
Then you can begin to measure your results vs activity. Are you meeting your purpose?
Here are 15 tips to really help you determine your purpose, focus on it and achieve it like never before!
1. Know EXACTLY where you want to be on December 31st 2015.
Write it down, create a picture board, do a powerpoint presentation, record an audio. Whatever it takes to make the vision of where you want to be at the end of 2015 crystal clear in your mind.
Make sure it’s specific. Saying I want to be fitter, or thinner or have more money won’t cut it.
What will your weight be exactly, what will you be able to do with your body exactly. How much money are you earning exactly.
That is the key.
It’s 31st of December 2015 and I weigh 154lbs, I go kite surfing everyday and my business is generating $100,000 a month with a 60% Gross Profit Margin.
That’s just a quick example and of course you can go into much more detail about other things you want, but hopefully that gives you an idea.
2. Think about who you want to be, not just what you want to achieve.
I really feel at the ripe old age of 42, that I really have only just got this.
Having spent years following the Brian Tracy school of goal setting and following the ‘rules’, looking at my goals, reflecting on my progress etc etc, I’ve often wondered, why am I still falling so far from what I want to achieve.
Recently I read (having owned it for about 6 years), Brendon Burchards – Life’s Golden Ticket and it really hit me like a ton of bricks.
Whilst I’m now an expert goal setter, at no point have I really thought about the person I want to be. I’ve always just been me and accepted who I am as read. Now don’t get me wrong, I like me, but there’s so much more I want to achieve in life and for that I need to step it up. I need to think bigger, have more confidence and self belief, think more like an experienced entrepreneur etc.
So once you have a crystal clear vision of where you want to be at the end of 2015, take some time out to consider who do you need to be to achieve that vision?
Do you need to be someone who has unbelievable self belief? Are you someone who laughs in the face of fear? Are you an early riser who runs 3 miles before they start work? Are you an energy freak etc?
As with step 1, write it down, record it, create pictures whatever it takes to make this incredibly real and exciting for you.
Think long and hard about this and get excited! This is the new enhanced version of you. This is the best YOU you can be!
3. Start making decisions and choices based on that vision, not where you are now.
With your vision of where you want to be and the person you want to be, imagine you’re already there.
You are already that person, you are already achieving your goals. Now make all your decisions from that place.
Stop making decisions based on scarcity or desperation. Those are the wrong decisions. They may give some short term relief, but rarely will they be beneficial in the long term.
Believe me, I’ve made a few of those over the years.
4. Design your business around your life, not your life around your business.
We only get one shot at this life and for some that shot is hugely shorter than others.
The only thing you really have absolutely zero control over in your life is when it’s your time to go.
So don’t waste a DAY! Decide right now what you want your life to look like and design your business around that. You want to finish at 2pm, finish at 2pm. You want to start at 9pm at night, start at 9pm at night.
You only want to work 4 hours a day, work 4 hours a day. Just make sure every hour you spend working is productive and revenue generating (see Step 6).
5. Stop being scared to make money.
We all want to help people right?
We all want to make a difference in the world or in our communities, but don’t forget why you started a business in the first place.
The road to freedom and helping people is profit!
It’s no good focusing solely on your passion and giving all your time to help others for free just because you love what you do and you have a mission.
Keep doing that and you won’t be able to help anyone!
You have to be able to make enough of a profit to run your business and create a team around you giving you the time to go out and live your passions day in and day out.
I watched an interview with Richard Branson a long time ago and he was asked when is the right time for a business to start giving to charity.
Now this may seem like an obvious answer, you may be thinking as soon as is humanly possible and you’d be right. But what’s the definition of humanly possible?
Branson was very clear that as a business owner you need to ensure your business is running solidly and profitably before you start to give anything away or else you run the risk of never being able to give anything!
The same is true of your time. Time is money, so you need to ensure you’re using every moment of your time to generate revenue.
I know you love what you do, but this is not a hobby. This is a business which could both give you the life you desire and make a huge difference in the world so start believing in yourself and….
6. Be ruthless with your time.
Sigh. I struggle with this one. Always have. One of the best books I have ever read on time management is Jason Fladliens – Double Your Productivity For Life
I have read it a few times now and will do so again in the very near future as every time I do and then put his practices into place I do indeed double my productivity, but because of my scatter brain personality, I tend to slide very quickly back into bad habits!
However, not this year. This is the year to absolutely master time! (Think about who you want to be).
We all have the same 24 hours in the day. We all have the same 60 minutes in an hour. Those who get more done are not necessarily more talented or have secret skills you don’t have they are simply MILITANT about their time.
They will not allow any unnecessary distractions to get in the way of the task at hand. They will set themselves deadlines that MUST be met no matter what!
They will plan their time and have clear outlines of projects and tasks so that when they begin something they’re already half way there.
They will outsource any tasks or jobs that do not match up to their pay grade and most importantly they will only spend their precious time doing things that bring home the bacon!
Here’s a great little exercise to do. For one week keep a time sheet and mark down every hour what you spent that hour doing. At the end of the week go through your time sheet and highlight every hour you spent doing something that would lead to sales. Also highlight every hour you spent doing something you could easily outsource.
I almost guarantee the latter will be far greater than the former.
You need to turn that around. Your timesheet needs to be filled with revenue generating highlights and have hardly anything on there that can be easily outsourced. That is what will dramatically change your business from what it is now to what you want it to become.
Last point – if you think you can’t afford to outsource, think again. I’m getting loads of jobs done on Fiverr.com at the moment. That place is a goldmine of talent!
7. Network and get around people who energise you!
Ever been around people who de-energise you? I know, we all have. You know that moment when you’re having a great idea and you’re super excited and you can’t wait to chase your dreams and then that lovely friend or spouse or family member you love so much just wanders in and tramples all over it in their size 10 feet!
It’s only because they love you and they want to protect you right? Or actually has it got more to with their own insecurities? Who knows, don’t waste your time thinking about it, just go out and get around people who have been there, done it and want what you want.
People who are successful take advise from those who have walked the path before them.
People who want to be successful but generally are not take advice from the bloke down the pub!
We live in a fantastically available online world these days so to get into groups and communities of like minded entrepreneurs is not difficult. However I would also advise finding people in your local area to mix with. Try going to meetups.com to see if there are any meetings you can attend, go to local seminars if you can, check out your local Chamber of Commerce.
Remember this is your life changing year, so don’t say you’re going to do it, or think about it. Make it happen!
Entrepreneurs are all around you, you just need to go find em!
8. Manage your money
This is going to be a short but important point!
Even if you have very little, it’s time to start managing it.
Just like your business goals and vision, if you want to achieve financial freedom you have to do it with purpose. That doesn’t just mean making it, it means managing it.
The art of making money is actually fairly simple, just follow my Six Figure Success System in the OMA and you’ll learn everything you need to know on how to actually generate sales online.
The trick is holding on to it!
I’m no accountant or financial advisor so I highly recommend following Dave Ramsey and purchasing one of his money makeover books. Start as you mean to go on!
9. Do one thing each day / week or month that pushes you out of your comfort zone.
FEAR = False expectations appearing real. In other words fear is what you make it.
From FDR’s inaugural speech in 1932, a particular quote has become extremely well known, the part where he says – “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself”, but the next part which is the crux of the sentence is always left out.
“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself — nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance”
Fear, something undefinable, paralyzes us and stops us from moving forward. In many cases it makes us move backwards. It is a silent killer, leading to panic, overwhelm, procrastination, lack of action and in the end, disappointment, sadness and misery.
Sorry to get a bit dramatic on you, but it’s true! You need to breakthrough your fears. You need to stand up and move forward no matter what. Sometimes you just need to close your eyes and jump!
Once again I recommend BB’s book – Life’s Golden Ticket as it addresses this issue of breaking through fear.
Also think about Step 2 and the person you want to be.
What would that person say, what would that person do? Would they let fear stand in the way of their dreams? No way hosé!
So, every day, week or month, the frequency is up to you (and your nerve endings). Do one thing that moves you out of your comfort zone. Start that blog you’ve been meaning to, launch that product, make that video, host that webinar, call that client. Whatever it is that you have help back doing for so long because of self doubt and fear.
Just take a deep breath, close you eyes and take a leap of faith. I guarantee it won’t be anything like as bad as you fear. In fact you’ll feel fantastic afterwards!
10. KISSSS – Keep It Super, Super, SUPER Simple.
If you’ve been with me for a while you may have heard me say this before, but there was a time when I could turn making a tuna sandwich into a military operation.
Such is the nature of the human psyche. We absolutely have to make things more complicated than they are. It gives the project or us more meaning, more worth, more justification.
Well, stop it! You don’t need anymore meaning or worth, you have an abundance of both. Reverse your thinking.
With everything you do ask yourself, how can I simplify this task or project?
I actually find the simple answer for me in most cases is – outsource it!
I remember a few years back when I spent an entire afternoon trying to figure out how to make a paypal payment link open on a new tab in your browser. We’re talking 4 hours or so working out how to add ‘target=”_blank”‘.
It was something I had no knowledge of at the time and things are only easy when you know how to do them!
I stubbornly refused to ask someone for help preferring to work it all out on my own. I just know you know what I’m talking about here! What a waste of time. Just ask someone!
Make it a habit in your life to simplify as much as possible. At every opportunity ask yourself these questions;
1. Is what I’m doing right now moving me closer to my goals?
2. Could someone else do this giving me the time to do what I really want and need to be doing?
3. How can I simplify what I’m doing right now?
4. How can I simplify it even more?
11. Become a Marketing Jedi!
Whoohoo, you’re in the right place! (The clue is in the title – Online Marketing Addicts.)
It doesn’t matter a hoot how good of a coach you are, hairdresser, dog trainer, artist, fitness expert or social media trainer if you do not know how to tell the world about you and your brand!
You MUST master the art of marketing. Promote, promote, promote.
The world of promotion has changed dramatically in the last few years so you need to become an expert in how to get your message & brand out to your community the right way. Make marketing your No 1 business priority.
It’s always amazed me how when a company is facing financial strife one of the first departments to go is the marketing department. For some reason, certainly in the offline world, marketing has always seemed like a bit of a luxury.
But without traffic, subscribers, and customers you have no business!
Marketing should be your LIFE in business. It should be intrinsic in everything you do, from your brand to your message to your customer support to your content to your products, to your team.
This blog post for example. It’s a decent post right? It’s written from the heart, it’s detailed, it’s inspirational (I hope), but no matter the quality, it will just sit on my blog without any traction unless I know how to get it out to the masses!
I must know how to promote and market this post to get my message and my brand out there.
So must you. If you’re publishing content and seeing no action it’s simply because you haven’t mastered the art of promotion yet.
(Stick with me kid and you’ll be wearing gold on the bottom of your shoes!) ;)
12. Invest in yourself and your education.
This is not an excuse to buy every bright shiny program available!
However, it is sensible to invest in the right programs that will give you and your business a leg up. Don’t try to learn it all yourself, step in the shoe prints others have left and learn their mistakes and triumphs the fast and easier way, through what they share with you.
But be focused about what you invest in. Is it relevant to your industry or niche? Is it from a teacher / product creator you trust or have been recommended to?
You will never stop learning, so embrace education.
I just bought a program yesterday to help me improve my funnel conversions. (I will share it with you once I’ve had a chance to check it out). Yes I already do a lot of split testing and testing and measuring, but if someone else is already getting the results I want, then I want to learn from that person.
I want to know what they’re doing and how they’re doing it and what better way to learn than from one of their courses!
A word of warning though. Don’t allow education to take over your life. As soon as you have watched a video or series of videos you need to take ACTION!
It’s the action part that’s the most important bit. So buy a course, study it and then act on it before you buy another one!
13. LOVE your customers.
Don’t just like your customers.
Don’t just strive for great customer service.
LOVE your customers.
Feel their pain, celebrate their successes, let them know how much you appreciate them. Get to know them, respond to their emails or comments. Be interested in their lives and their challenges. Your business isn’t about you. It’s about them.
I honestly do not think I could do half of what I do without the feedback I get from my subscribers. I’m always receiving emails asking questions or seeking clarification.
Pretty much all my content comes from questions I have been asked or I see being asked in forums or on social media.
I also receive many emails from people who are shocked I responded and tell me how much they appreciate knowing there is a ‘real’ person on the end of the emails I send out.
So just by actually paying attention and being a ‘real’ person you can really stand out from the competition.
If you create products include a community. If you have an email list encourage them to respond to you and send them a reply. Create an FB Group or G+ Community and invite your subscribers. Go above and beyond to help and support customers.
It may seem like a big job, but believe me it will pay off big time!
14. Master the art of happiness.
Happiness is a choice not a circumstance.
We all have the same 24 hours in every day. We will all at some point in our lives lose people we love, we will all suffer health issues, I grant you some worse than others, but whatever life throws at us it’s how we deal with it that determines the outcome.
Tony Robbins tells an amazing story in his personal power series (which I highly recommend by the way) about a chap called W Mitchell.
This guy, a healthy and fit ex-marine, has a motorbike accident that leaves him with 65% of his body covered with devastating burns. Clearly in pain every day, he returns to life as normally as he can with an incredibly positive outlook a smile on his face and goes on to build a successful business. Unfortunately 4 years later while flying his small plane, he crashes. His passengers walk away unharmed, but the crash paralyzes him, leaving him wheelchair bound for the rest of his life.
W Mitchell is now a worldwide motivational speaker and author of the book – It’s Not What Happens to You, It’s What You Do About It.
I’ve only touched the surface of this story and I urge you to get the book or visit his website to learn more, but the message here is all about – CHOICE.
You choose how you feel every day. You choose how you deal with the ‘stuff’ in your life. You choose what to focus on each day and although it’s not easy sometimes, you choose whether to feel happy or not.
If you’re reading this and thinking, come on Jo, it’s just not that easy then you’re right. It’s not easy if you have developed a pattern of negative thinking. In fact it’s hard. But it’s doable. It’s all about mastering your emotions and training your brain to replace the repetitive negative thoughts with empowering ones.
If you’re in that situation I urge you to get yourself a copy of Anthony Robbins’ Personal Power II: The Driving Force! by Tony Robbins, find yourself a good life coach if you can (ideally recommended by someone who has experienced the change) and dedicate yourself to finding happiness.
Make it a daily priority to fuel your mind with books, videos, audio, people who all advocate and practise positive mindset shifts and habits.
The more you can immerse yourself in the education of what rituals to undertake to induce happiness the happier you will become.
I don’t want to get maudlin, but the world we live in can become dark sometimes. The news is filled with tragedy. Social Media seems to be bringing out the worst in many resulting in a frequently increasing negative environment and for many the only time family or friends get in touch is to tell you how crappy their life is!
I sat down the other day and watched the original English version of Pollyanna with my daughter. In it Pollyanna plays the ‘Glad Game’ with everyone in the community. A game in which they all have to take a situation they don’t like and express how they could be glad about it. The result is she cheers them all up!
Now I know that’s a film, but what she’s doing is getting them to create a ritual, a thought pattern in their mind, so that next time they come across something that would normally bring them down their first thought is, what is it about this situation I could be glad about.
So if you want to be truly happy you have to work on it like you would your business. Fuel your mind with the right stuff and people everyday and make a choice to master the art of happiness!
15. Have FUN!
What are we doing all this for if it isn’t to have FUN!
I’m not talking about when you finish work and spend time with your family. I’m talking about while you’re working.
Do it because you enjoy it, because you love what you do, because it gets you excited, because it gets you out of bed in the mornings. Do it because it makes you HAPPY!
If you have to drag yourself out of bed in the mornings dreading opening your computer or reading your email you’re probably in the wrong job!
Remember Step 4 – Don’t waste a DAY!
If you don’t enjoy what you do then make some plans to do an about turn and start doing something else!
Sometimes life requires massive action so take it!
